Neuman Wins
FFA State Competition |

Kelli Neuman, a Junior at
East Chambers High School
and a member of the East
Chambers FFA chapter
traveled to Huntsville, on
Friday, December 4, to
participate in the Texas FFA
Leadership Development
Events. This is Sam Houston
State University’s 75th year
hosting the Texas FFA
Leadership Development
Events. The East Chambers
FFA Senior Creed Speaker
qualified for the state
contest after she was named
the district winner on
November 11 and the area
winner on November 18.
On Friday, December 4, Kelli
spoke in the semi-finals with
the top 20 speakers in the state
and advanced to speak again in
the finals on Saturday, December
5, with the top 10 speakers in
the state. Six hundred and
eighty eight students
participated in Senior Creed
Speaking in Texas this year.
Kelli won the first place Senior
Creed Speaking Contest title.

FFA chapters throughout Texas
were represented at the state
contest where they were
competing for state titles in 12
different FFA events. Some FFA
Leadership Development Events
include: Chapter Conducting,
Creed Speaking, Farm Skills
Demonstration, Agriculture
Issues Forum, Public Relations,
Creed Speaking, Job Interview,
FFA Quiz and Radio Broadcast.
The Texas FFA is one of the
nation’s largest state FFA
associations with a membership
of 72,234 active FFA members in
Texas and 1,000 local FFA
chapters. On average there are
approximately 18 schools per
district. FFA programs teach
skills in leadership, career
development and personal growth.
FFA gives students the
opportunity to practically apply
classroom knowledge to
real-world experiences through
local, state and national
competitions. |

FFA Competes
at Leadership Development
Events Competition |

On November 11, 2009, ECHS FFA
traveled to Dayton High School
to compete in the Annual
Leadership Development Events
Competition. Eighth graders,
Andrew McGovern, Cullen Barrow,
Veronica Moncada, and Brelee
LeBlanc competed against all
first-year Ag students in the
Greenhand Quiz Contest, and they
walked away with a first-place
banner. McGovern won high-point
individual. The Senior Quiz Team
consisting of Kelli Neuman,
Emily Neuman, Cullen Sonnier,
and Gloria Ramirez won first
place as well. Kelli Neuman won
high-point individual. Kelli
also competed in the Senior
Creed Contest, winning first
place. Jaxon Vanya, an eighth
grader, competed in the
Greenhand Creed Contest and won
third place. The Radio
Broadcasting Team consisting of
Abraham Aviles, Cullen Sonnier,
and Gloria Ramirez won out of
over 100 teams which had
competed at the 2009 Ricebelt
District LDEC. |

The Greenhand and
Senior Quiz Teams, as well as
the Senior Creed Speaker,
advanced to the area contest on
November 18, 2009 held at
Stephen F. Austin University.
The Greenhand Quiz Team won
third, the Senior Quiz Team won
sixth, and the Senior Creed
Speaker won first, advancing to
state. Kelli will be competing
at Sam Houston State University
on December 4 and 5 for the
state champion's title. |

The Area IX FFA is collecting soda
can tabs for the Ronald McDonald
Foundation for the rest of the year.
All tabs can be sent to the Ag
building. |

The East Chambers FFA is hosting
their annual Fresh Country Fruit and
Meat Fundraiser until November 22,

Neuman Receives
Award |
|
Michael Neuman was recently selected
to receive the Honorary American FFA
Degree – Teacher. The award is given
to those who advance agricultural
education and FFA through
outstanding personal commitment. The
Honorary American FFA Degree is an
opportunity to recognize those who
have gone beyond the valuable daily
contributions to make an
extraordinary long-term difference
in the lives of students, inspiring
confidence in a new generation of
agriculturalist. Recipients in the
“teacher” category are selected on
the basis of their contributions in
the following seven areas:
classroom/laboratory instruction,
experiential learning of students,
National FFA Organization, building
partnerships, agricultural education
program marketing, agricultural
education program development and
evaluation, and professional
development of agricultural
education teachers. In addition,
teachers must have taught for a
minimum of ten years and their
agriculture education program must
have 85 percent membership in the
past year.
Neuman will travel to Indianapolis
in order to receive the honor during
the 82nd National FFA Convention,
held Oct. 21-24, 2009. All
recipients will receive a
certificate and medal and their
names will be permanently recorded. |

ECHS FFA
Receives Recognition |
|
The National FFA
Organization recently
selected from a pool of more
than 600 candidates
nationwide the East Chambers
FFA Chapter as a 2-star
winner in the National FFA
Chapter Award program. The
chapter has been invited to
attend the 82nd national
convention to be held in
Indiana on October 21-24,
2009, to be recognized. |

FFA Members
Attend Leadership Conference |
 |
The Washington Monument, the
Arlington National Cemetery,
and the Lincoln Memorial
were just a few of the
sights that six local FFA
members witnessed this
summer at the 2009
Washington Leadership
Conference. The WLC is a
week-long conference to work
and build on FFA members'
leadership qualities, as
well as community
involvement with in their
area.
Jacob Brock, Rylee Hobbs, DJ
Melancon, Alexis Mitchell, Kelli
Neuman, and Catherine Till
were among 130 members
present from across the
country that attended the
conference. The group also
had the opportunity to meet
with congressman Ted Poe.
