Tramain Thomas
Plays in PA News/Gamble Award Game |

Tramain Thomas played in
the Port Arthur News/James Gamble
Award basketball game on Friday,
March 28, 2008, at the Parker Center
in Port Arthur. Gamble's Award
team fell short losing a close
game 94-97. The correlating
awards banquet was held on
Saturday, March 29, where the
Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside
awards were announced.
Thomas was chosen as the
recipient of the sixth
annual Port Arthur News/James
Gamble "Mr. Outside" Award,
making him the first player to
receive both the Gamble Award
and the Willie Ray Smith Award.

The 16th Annual Willie Ray Smith
Awards Banquet was held
Wednesday night, March 5, 2008, at the Elegante Hotel in Beaumont. A
selection committee which was
comprised of television sports
directors, newspaper sports
editors and writers, and radio
personalities selected the
nominees and ultimate winners
for the outstanding offensive
and defensive high school
football players in southeast
Texas. Among the finalists were:
Christine Michael, West Brook;
Cory Bell, W0-S; Pierce Rhodes,
Kirbyville; Kheeston Randall,
Kelly; Cody Hussey, Lumberton;
David Falgout, West Brook;
DePauldrick Garrett, WO-S; and
Tramain Thomas, East
Chambers. Keynote speaker
was Coach Frank Middleton,
Beaumont native and former NFL
player.
Thomas, who was the first person
in the history of the award to
be selected as a finalist
for both the outstanding
offensive |

and defensive player, was
selected as the winner of the
Outstanding Defensive Player of
Southeast Texas.

Selections Announced |
|
The following EC athletes were
selected as all-district in 24-2A boys basketball:

SETXsports Basketball Teams |
Taylor Kurek, a junior at
ECHS, was named honorable mention
on the 2007-2008 All SETXsports
Girls Basketball Team. Tramain
Thomas and Vance McDonald,
seniors at ECHS, were selected to
the boys 2007-2008 All SETXsports
basketball teams. Thomas was
selected MVP and first team; and
McDonald, third team.
In addition, Tramain Thomas has been
selected to the TABC All-State team
and has been nominated to play in
the THSCA (Texas High School Coaches
Association) all-star basketball
game. |

McDonald Sign National Letters of
Intent |
|
Tramain Thomas and Vance
McDonald signed National Letters
of Intent to play college football
Wednesday morning, February 6, 2008.
Thomas committed to the University
of Arkansas (Razorbacks) and
McDonald to Rice University (Owls).
Both have received full
scholarships. Tramain is the son of
Carla and Billy Thomas; Vance is the
son of Beverly and Bret McDonald.

Tramain
Thomas Selected as Finalist for
Willie Ray Smith Award |
 |
Tramain Thomas
has been selected as a finalist
for the Willie Ray Smith award
for both the outstanding
offensive and defensive player
of the year. He is the first
player ever to have been chosen
as a finalist on both offense
and defense.
The 16th annual Willie Ray Smith
awards banquet, honoring the
premier area high school
football standouts of the 2007
season, will be held on March 5,
2008.

Coach
Willie Ray Smith, Sr. began his
coaching career in 1942 at Dunbar
High School in Lufkin, Texas. After
coaching for four years, Coach Smith
went to Orange where he coached
until 1957. In 1957, he began an
eighteen-year coaching career at
Charlton-Pollard High School in
Beaumont. Coach Smith retired from
coaching in 1976 after winning 235
games with a 'tough discipline'
philosophy. He was instrumental in
establishing the Beaumont area as a
formidable football region. |

Southeast Texas Football Team
Selected |

The 2007 All Southeast Texas
Football Team was announced and
posted on the SETXsports website.
East Chambers was represented
with 4 athletes chosen to
the team, and they are:
Tramain Thomas - Player of
the Year; Paul Trammell -
1st team defense, linebacker; Vance
McDonald - 1st team offense,
tight end; and Donte Raymond
- 2nd team offense, running
back.

ECHS Football Players Receive
Prestigious Honors |
|

Tramain Thomas has been
selected as the Beaumont
Enterprise Defensive MVP for
Southeast Texas. Paul Trammell
was also selected to the team as a
linebacker.
In addition, Tramain was selected as
the Port Arthur News Most
Valuable Player. According to their
spokesperson, no one from a 2A
school has ever received this award
in its 36-year history. Also,
Tramain has been selected to
represent East Chambers on the
Associated Press 2A All-State
Football team as an honorable
mention quarterback. |
