JV Football One Game Away from Undefeated Season
The junior varsity Buccaneers hosted the Kountze lions on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Both junior high and junior varsity teams played in Winnie in an attempt to preserve Kountze's field for Friday night's varsity game because of impending bad weather. First quarter action saw  East Chambers score on a 60-yard interception return by Kirby Johnson with the 2-point conversion made also on a run by Johnson. Both the Bucs and the lions would score during second quarter play. The lions' only score of the night came in the second quarter on a long run after a botched snap on a punt. EC would score on a 10-yard run by Glenn Roberts with the PAT no good, and once again on another 10-yard run by Roberts with the 2-point conversion good on a run by Kirby Johnson. JV Football Secures Victory in Final Seconds of the Game

The junior varsity Buccaneers traveled to Anahuac on Thursday, October 15, 2009, to take on the Panthers on their home field. Striving to add another victory to their 7-0 record, the Bucs knew it would be a hard fought game with their cross-county rivals. The Bucs and the Panthers traded scores and the lead throughout the night, and the game intensified down to the last ticks on the clock.

During the first quarter, EC scored on a touchdown pass from Kaleb LaVergne to Brady Bettis, and the 2-point play was converted on a run by LaVergne. With one second remaining in the first half, trailing 14-8, EC ran the "hitch and pitch." LaVergne threw the ball to Kirby Johnson who then pitched it back to Glenn Roberts for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed. Third quarter action saw a 5-yard touchdown run by Jacoby Wells. Again the 2-point conversion would fail. In the fourth quarter, Glenn Roberts would add 6 on a touchdown run with the 2-point conversion good on a pass from LaVergne to Bettis. With one minute remaining and EC driving, Anahauc intercepted a pass inside their own 5-yard line seemingly to seal a 30-28 win. But two plays later, Quinten Kahla punched the ball out and EC recovered. On the next play Glenn Roberts scored on a touchdown run of 8 yards. The 2-point play failed, but it gave EC a 34-28 lead with 30 seconds left. The defense took the field and was able to force the Panthers to turn the ball over on downs. The Bucs took a knee on the final play securing the win.

The EC players played with great heart and class showing why you never quit and play to the final buzzer sounds.

The win improves the JV’s record to 8-0. Next week is a bye week for the Bucs, but they will look to continue their winning streak on Thursday, October 29, against Kountze at home. Game is TBA.

Determined JV Football Team Beats the Newton Eagles

Thursday night, September 3, 2009, the EC JV Football team took down the Newton Eagles by the score of 28-24 in a back and forth game that saw numerous momentum changes. EC struck first after Newton fumbled the opening kickoff. The offense marched the ball down the field, and Xavier Broussard capped the drive off with a scramble for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed giving EC an early 6-0 lead. Newton would strike back on the ensuing drive but also failed on the two-point conversion knotting the score at 6-6 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would see much of the same with EC scoring on a screen pass to Glenn Roberts and Kaleb LaVergne converting the two-point play. Once again Newton answered, but the Bucs stuffed their two-point attempt and took a 14-12 lead into halftime.

EC scored first in the second half on a QB keeper by LaVergne this time converting on the two-point play pushing their lead to 22-12. Once more Newton answered with a TD. After the failed two-point attempt, the score was 22-18. EC drove the ball methodically down the field converting a big fourth down play on a nice run by Roberts inside Newton’s five-yard line giving them first and goal from the one. LaVergne finally bulled his way into the endzone, but the Bucs were unable to gain two more points on the point after attempt and took a 28-18 lead. Newton showed no signs of giving up scoring quickly by running the kickoff back, but they were held out on the two-point play bringing the score to 28-24. Newton recovered the onside kick to regain possession of the ball and forced the Buccaneer defense back onto the field. The Bucs responded nicely forcing and recovering a fumble. The offense took the field and was able to pick up a crucial first down forcing Newton to use their final timeout. The Bucs were able to kneel the ball securing the win and pushing their record to 2-0 on the season. Next week the JV Bucs will take on Hamshire-Fannett at home. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. but is subject to change.

JV Football Starts Off Season with Win Over Orangefield

Thursday night, August 27, 2009, the Buccaneer JV football team traveled to Orangefield to take on the Bobcats. After an inopportune face mask penalty, the Bobcats broke a long touchdown run and added the PAT to go up 7-0. The Bucs, however, rallied back and marched the ball down the field scoring on a pass from Kaleb LaVergne to Brady Bettis. Glenn Roberts converted the two-point conversion to put the Bucs on top 8-7 with a couple of minutes left in the first quarter. The second quarter saw both teams go back and forth with neither team finding the end- zone again. On the first possession of the third quarter, EC once again marched down the field and capped it off by a Roberts' touchdown run. After the failed two- point play, EC held a 14-7 lead. Jacoby Wells would add another touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 20-7. The Bobcats responded with a touchdown of their own to bring the score to 20-14. Orangefield forced the Bucs to punt and then drove the ball inside EC’s ten-yard line. A holding penalty moved the ball back to the twenty and EC’s defense bent, but didn’t break forcing the Bobcats to turn the ball over on downs with forty-two seconds left in the game. East Chambers took a knee to secure the win. It was a hard fought victory and a great way to start off the new season for the JV Bucs. Next up is the Newton Eagles on Thursday, September 3, at Buccaneer Stadium.
